​현재환은 과학사학자로, 부산대학교 교양교육원 조교수로 재직하며 「역사 속의 과학」, 「과학기술로 읽는 동아시아」, 「과학기술로 읽는 세상」, 「기후변화와 탄소중립」 등의 수업을 통해 과학사, 과학기술학(Science and Technology Studies, STS), 환경사를 가르치고 있습니다.

또 다음의 주제들을 "트랜스-아시아"(trans-Asia)와 "관전사"(transwar)라는 관점에서

연구 중입니다.

(1) "인종 과학"으로서의 한국과 일본의 인류 유전학과 체질인류학의 역사

(2) "과학 외교" 관점에서 본 (2-1) 자연보전과 보전과학 및

(2-2) 재일코리안 과학기술자들의 역사 

(3) 한국과 일본의 우생학의 역사

(4) 동아시아 마스크의 역사

이와 같은 다양한 연구 주제들에는 "한국"과 "과학"이라는 틀에 갇히지 않는 "한국 과학사"를 쓰려는 노력이 녹아있습니다. 이외에도 과학사 및 과학기술학과 관련된 대중적인 글들이나 정책적 글들을 종종 쓰고 발표하기도 합니다.

Jaehwan Hyun is an assistant professor of History of Science and Technology at Pusan National University. Currently, Jaehwan is working on four projects. (1) The first one revolves around the histories of genetics and anthropology in South Korea and Japan, specifically within the framework of "racial science." (2) Secondly, he is investigating the history of conservationism and conservation science, as well as the history of Zainichi scientists (Korean scientists residing in Japan), from the perspective of "science diplomacy." (3) The third project focuses on the history of eugenics in South Korea, (4) while the fourth project delves into the East Asian history of face masks. Jaehwan’s approach to these projects involves challenging the standard periodization and geographical demarcation by taking a trans-war and trans-Asian focus.
